Anytime is a good time to practice speaking Creole! Louisiana Creole is similar to Haitian Creole, partly due to the influence of the many Haitians who arrived, willingly and not, in flight from their Revolution.
This is RAM at the 2006 Carnaval in Port-au-Prince. See and hear it, and then also Ganpati’s video response. Both are shot in the city, and I live in the country and New Orleans still lies in mostly in ruins, so these videos make me nostalgic.
I am of course now walking through a city of cities, “the most transparent region of the air” in Alexander van Humboldt’s, then Alfonso Reyes’, and finally Carlos Fuentes’ famous phrase. Here both I, the author, and Professor Zero, the character who speaks in first person and weaves his and her voice with mine, are nearly home.
