Roads to Perfection II

I am going to Leyla’s wedding tonight, to a boy I do not trust and on whom she has already spent her savings. She is still working as a supermarket checker. She was an honored and beribboned graduate of our department and I am more than sure that it is for reasons of race and class that she has not been able to get a better job. For the sake of the boy she is not going to graduate school or to some form of professional training in another town, but is joining the Air Force. It is something the boy understands, and it brings a better immediate salary. Her father is terrified she will be deployed to Iraq, and so am I.

Axé.
