Today was crystal clear and sunny. One of my New Year’s resolutions, which I may keep more or less well, is to blog here once weekly rather than once daily, and to blog far more regularly at my research site.

Another of my New Year’s resolutions is to see more movies. Today I saw No Country for Old Men. I did not like Javier Bardem in it but I liked Tommy Lee Jones a great deal.

I was once stuck in Southwest Texas, very near where this film is set, for five days when my car blew up, and I met many people similar to the characters in the movie, good and bad. This was on my way to Louisiana, the first time I moved here.

I have seen other films set on the Texas-Mexico border but always at the Kabuki in San Francisco, the CineArte in São Paulo, or some other faraway, urban place. Then south Texas gaits and accents seemed exotic indeed. Outside the theatre was another world.

Now I live here, and those gaits and accents are familiar. When I got into the car NPR was playing country music. The friend I met for dinner twangs and hunts. “To filet this kind of fish, follow along the dorsal fin with the tip of your knife, as you would the backstrap of a deer.”
