Soon after coming to live with me, the cat informed me that he was a Kitten and would remain one until at least age three. In my opinion he was already a Teenager, but after some thought I accepted his proposal. I did expect some adult behavior, such as being able chase away those cats with whom he does not wish to share the garden, to begin sooner.
Recently I realized that after years of battle my cat was tired, depressed and insecure. Last month we started running and shouting with him, helping him run off the other cats, and he has become much silkier and happier. Has he forced me to accept the fact that he is a permanent Kitten – oder nicht?
My friend’s theory is that having spent his earliest life in indoor captivity, my cat did not learn from his mother how to defend territory. He thus depends on instinct only, unsupported by concrete examples. Therefore we must support him in developing his defense skills.
