What Grade Would Jesus Give?

The title of this post is an excellent question since so many of the poorly written essays I have read defend the implementation of  “Biblical” principles.

I know exactly what grades I would really give on these examinations. I learned how to make grades for courses like this one as a T.A. and I cannot seem to adjust. I have therefore developed a table of equivalencies. At the left are grades by T.A. Zero. Professor Zero’s translation is at the right.

A+ = A+
A = A+
A- = A-
B+ = A-
B = B+
B- = B
C+ = B
C = B-
C- = C
D+ = C-
D = C-
D- = D
F+ = D-
F = F
F- = F

This puts the median at B-. There are seven levels of Heaven above it, and seven levels of Hell below. It may or may not be just, but it is at least rational. Irrationality is just too heartrending for me, so I have gone with the most rational system I can devise.

What grade would Jesus give? Seeing how many problems there are in these examinations I feel terribly sorry for the students. I do not think pity is a positive emotion, however, and I think Jesus might agree. And I notice that it is an emotion, not a feeling, so one should not be guided by it.

For advice I went to see one of the instructors, who teaches many more sections of this course than I and whom I imagine to have devised a better system for teaching the material than I. He said no, my results are as bad as yours, don’t worry about it. The problem is not that these students are impaired and that we need to adjust our expectations. The problem is that they have misunderstood the Word of God and the nature of lilies.

What grade would Jesus give? The lilies of the field know God will provide, but that does not mean they do not study.

Axé.

  1. About “God will provide”: there’s an old story about a man who refuses to leave his house when first the police and then the National Guard try to get him to evacuate as a tornado bears down. When he arrives in heaven, he says to God, “I thought you were going to provide for me.” “I did,” says God. “Who do you think sent the police and the National Guard?”

    Studying is the National Guard.
