Academic Mondays: Research Culture I

I do not enjoy painting or carpentry. I had dinner with a friend who discussed the lack of research culture here, the poor holdings at the library, the fact that so many faculty do not appear to come from a research culture themselves, and the lack of funding for research. She is attempting to adjust to the situation and seeks my wisdom. I am innured to it, which is in some ways compliant but is not wise.

Axé.

  1. It is by Carnegie categories. If I reveal the exact Carnegie category, it will “out” me.

You have to realize, though, that even in the lower echelons of the highest Carnegie research category, the level of research culture varies very greatly by field. That has to do with how you make it into these Carnegie categories. One of the criteria is how much grant money is brought in, and the big grant money is in STEM fields.
