Academic Monday: Criticize This Sentence, #1

Whiteman: If you are serious about in your field, your favorite course to teach will be the 101 course in it.

Z: What? I would say the exact opposite: especially if you are serious about it, you will not enjoy watching it slaughtered by barbarian hordes!

Whiteman: That means you are serious about your career, but not about your field.

Z: What does the audience think? Where did dat whiteman get these ideas? Whom do these ideas serve?

Axé.

  1. Sounds like a standard line given out by Da Whiteman to quell discontent. It’s a shaming statement: if you don’t love teaching 101, then you’re not serious about your field. Thus the person is shamed into teaching what they don’t want to teach.

A convenient deception to make people teach 101 courses. Which no one in their right mind would want to teach. Especially with the number of dullards who slog through every 101 class, mouth agape, sleeping in class, so they can get the basics out of the way and get on to their Major in Petrochemical Engineering or Bu$ine$$ Law.

Whom do these ideas serve? Allen Ginsberg would tell you, “MOLOCH,” and he might be right.

  2. Quell discontent, shame, that’s an acute analysis, thanks. There’s something really disturbing to me in the implication, “If you don’t like 101 best, then you’re some kind of impostor / you’re not sacrificing enough / etc.” Shame, that’s the name for it.
