Go Down Old Hannah

This is an Alan Lomax recording. The picture is apparently from the 50s but that is exactly how the men at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola look walking out to work each morning, today.

I am trying to decide what records I will send to the people far away who helped with my bibliography. I was thinking of other local things, happy things of the type tourists cannot find but will like when shown. But I can also get things like this.

“Well wake up old dead man / help me carry my row.” “Well I’m sorry, man / They done drove me down.” “Well if you get lucky / and make it back home / Well go down by Julie / Tell her I won’t be home. / I was a good man / But they drove me down.”

Axé.
