Midnight in the Offices

It’s fun to work in the offices weekend nights now that the weather has cooled down, but it is not fun during the week because it is so noisy. The janitors finish working but are not allowed to leave, so they go into the offices, sit in the chairs and speak sleepily on the phones to their various family members. There is a chorus of sleepy uh-huh, uh-huh, ha-ha, until they finally fall asleep.

This is an odd feature of here that I had not noticed at other universities, and before privatization the nighttime activities of the janitors were more interesting. Once I went into the lounge at night to find a stack of books I had left and they were in there with the lights low and the music on, smoking and shooting dice. It was a lot more lively then than during the day, and this is one of the scenes I am glad to have witnessed in life.

Axé.

  1. On the one night of heavy snowfall that I missed the last train and was forced to sleep in the grad students’ lounge, I didn’t see a single janitor. What I did see, at one point, was a glowing red dot moving about in the distance (one side of the wall was made of glass). I hope it was the tip of a cigar/cigarette, but it would be rather thrilling if it was something else.

  2. They have to stay even though they’re done working? At least if they can smoke and play games the time passes more valuably. And somehow adds a touch of magic realism to “night time in the office.”

  3. The housekeepers and cleaners at a place down the street have a high old time when the owner isn’t around, using the hot tub and swimming pool.
