Two minutes after I left this comment, I discovered the following remark Rick Perry made in New Hampshire, during a debate: “[The] reason we fought the revolution in the 16th century was to get away from that kind of onerous crown.”
I find that hard to believe but then a person who was born and lived part of his youth in the same house in which I lived married the great – granddaughter of Paul Revere so I have a reason to know. If you want to check it out then: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/physicians/030002-2300-e.html
Same here. The only difference is that my students tend to place it in the Middle Ages. Often, before 1492.
But everybody is very patriotic.

Everything is getting clearer to me now.

Osler, fascinating.
Patriotic, yes. But, what they like to do in life is sleep and shop, they say, and they like the US because these things can be done very well here.
