On Space

I am harvesting blood oranges. Usually they are killed by hurricanes or frost, but now there are very many, red and sweet. We are finishing the semester, so of course it is orange-time.

The academic advisors keep saying you must save time, “protect” it like a fortress, but with all due respect to time, I would rather think about space. There is space in the day for different things, and space you inhabit, and the space you imagine around you.

What I do not like about not being in a cross disciplinary position is the lack of space – enmeshed departments, enmeshing students, so many people pressing about. I see now that if I breathe a large space around myself, I am in control of my projects.

Whereas if I imagine myself inhabiting squares of time, each one limited and also in need of protection, I do not function well. I have no peace; I feel I must wait for the galloping hordes, ready to break down the walls of my time-cell, to pass on by.

Axé.

  1. You see time as subordinate to space? I did a post recently where a Mexican commented on the different cultural attitudes between Latinos and Anglos on time. Living in the ever present is considered superior where he lives.

  2. Well that is interesting – perhaps my attitude is cultural, yes. I’m sort of Native American + Asian when it comes right down to it.

  3. Nice to see you are still blogging.

    Love the photo.

I’m into citrus as well, with my Everhard Navel Oranges having ripened, and my Eureka Lemons ripening one, by one.

“There is space in the day for different things, and space you inhabit, and the space you imagine around you.”

    Interesting point.

There are times when certain things are done in a space, or span, of time. There is space you inhabit, both physically and mentally.

And there is space that “you imagine around you” as I look outside my apartment window and admire the fruit of my labors, where others see a 4′ x 8′ space, I see land, beauty and joy that goes on, and on, and on.
