“Voi che sapete” in English

Now we have an English approximation of one of this weblog’s main songs. All of our other main songs, were chosen because they fit our ostensible themes, but I had not known why “Voi che sapete” was one of our main songs until I got this question from a student today: “How are you able to be so happy, enthusiastic and energetic, all the time?”

I thought I was just making sure to keep a smile on my face, but I appear to be enthusiastic and enraptured, like Cherubino. So here we go:

You, who know what love is,
Ladies, see if I have it in my heart.
That which I feel, I will explain to you;
It is new to me; I don’t understand it.
I sense an affection full of desire,
Which now is pleasure, now is agony.
I freeze, and then I feel my soul burning,
And in a moment I return to freezing.
I look for something beautiful outside of myself,
I don’t know who holds it, I don’t know what it is.
I sigh and moan without wanting to,
I quiver and tremble without knowing it.
I find no peace night or day
but yet it pleases me to suffer this way!
You, who know what love is. . .

Axé.

  1. It looks as if you’re tirelessly happy! Me, I am very happy most of the time. Today I feel really tired and it might be a good idea to get a full night sleep right away.
