Louisiana Legislature

The legislative session is being unleashed upon us today and it is easy to see why people are anti-government — what the Pelican State is going to do, apparently, is pass bills to better soak the public. Naturally, this will be done “without taxes.”

From the LFT:

The governor’s supporters say they want to pass major bills very early in the session, as quickly as possible, and without amendments. The House Education Committee has already scheduled a hearing on the governor’s package, HB 974, HB 976 and HB 933 for Wednesday morning at 8:30 A.M.

There are indications that the Senate Education Committee may deliberate its versions of the governor’s package on Thursday.

If these bills pass as written, there will never be another across-the-board pay raise for Louisiana teachers and school employees – future salary schedules will be determined by local school superintendents.

Due process rights for teachers, including tenure, will be gutted. Virtually every decision made about teachers’ professional lives will depend on the new, unproven teacher evaluation system.

Observe the legislature here. Watch anything having to do with health insurance, the state retirement system, or education very closely. Contact your representatives. Respect yourself and your profession regardless of what is said about it around you, and do not give up.

Axé.

  1. I voted for Bobby Jindal and support him for governor but I disagree with him on substitueing state income tax and raising the sales tax. This will hurt senior citizens because most donot pay state income tax now, but they do buy groceries, medicine, etc. and will pay more sales tax. This bill should NOT be passed, KILL this Bill.
