…in reverse, because I am the American, ferrying undocumented workers back through Mexico in a middle class way.
So my friend´s gardener´s wife and their son have to return to their caserío in rural Mexico a year ahead of schedule, so she can care for her dying father. They will fly from a location in the United States to Mexico City, make their way from the airport to the right bus station, and travel on by bus. She is very worried as she has never been to Mexico City and is very rural in general. She has never flown before.
I was thinking, she was smuggled into the United States and that is definitely scarier than taking an official cab from the airport to a bus station and buying a ticket, but that is not how she feels. However, I have the solution now and it is so middle class, it is very funny.
1. Forget the official cabs – there is a cab I know; I will reserve that one and use it, negotiating the plan ahead of time with this known driver.
2. We pick them up at the airport.
3. The best bus station for where they are going is at the Observatorio metro stop, by Chapultepec Park.
4. On the way to this bus station we will drive through the park. We will stop off for some of the famous ice cream and buy a balloon for the child, who has never been to Mexico.
5. At the bus station I will put them on the first class bus, that has movies.
Doesn´t that seem much better than letting them navigate alone?
Axé.
And, I would take them to this restaurant if I did not think it would intimidate them.
