The Sierra Club

They telephoned me. I do not like to receive telephone solicitation at home. I said I would put my membership renewal in the mail. They said I should do it by phone, now, as a special, high level donor. I said no. They said I really ought to renew by phone, at least, to save trees. I said, I am in the middle of work, I do not like to do these things by phone, I have received paper mail and I will renew by return mail.

They were quite put out and I said, I am sorry. I did not think to say until after hanging up that if they would truly like to save trees, and while they are at it fuel, they might consider not imposing their glossy magazine upon me. Do you hear that, Sierra Club? As long as you can justify publishing and mailing a large, glossy magazine, I can justify sending you a small, light piece of paper in the mail. I believe in supporting the post office.

Axé.

  1. Do you have caller I.D.? I am too short tempered to deal with those calls any more.

  2. I don’t have a phone with a screen to see the number. I used to be too short tempered to deal with those calls, but now I am just very calm and firm…

    1. You should get yourself one with screen. I have a rather inexpensive Panasonic that works well. It gives you the choice to not answer the phone if you don’t feel like it. I used to get a lot of phone calls from companies and vendors and the screen has helped me to avoid their harassement. Now some companies have devised a trick and, instead of a number, you see: PRIVATE. A few times I eagerly answered the phone thinking there was some of my friends with unlisted telephone. Then I realized it was just a trick and don’t get the telephone anymore. I only respond to numbers that I know.

  3. I want also a flashing light, to tell me I have voicemail. Without it, I forget to check — sometimes for weeks!

  4. “Big Green” does like to throw its weight around. Good for some things, but not IMO always very trustworthy or even green.

  5. It really is not clear to me what the Sierra Club is any more, at the national level — a front group for REI merchandise, perhaps? 😉
