The proposed contract would allow the administration to remove faculty in cases of “the substantial curtailment or discontinuance of a program which removes any reasonable opportunity for using a faculty member’s services,” a “failure to meet professional responsibilities,” a “failure to perform academic assignments competently,” and a “financially based reduction in force.”

  1. While I support tenure, and believe it is essential to the strength of the university, I’m having trouble getting excited about this one. This strikes me as the showier, more overtly political, but ultimately less effective version of a campaign against tenure that has been being waged, often with tenured faculty’s support and de facto cooperation, over the last few decades, and which has resulted in 70% of the faculty currently being off the tenure track. That’s how tenure is going to die, not with a bang but with a whimper. While I’d like to believe not, it may already be terminal.
