We drank this nero d’avola, a wine from a grape I did not know about. It is grown, made, and bottled on a fief that calls itself a fief (the Feudo Principi di Butera) and has existed since at least 1543. We toasted research, which we are now undertaking in rebellion against some of the older and also newer guards at our respective branches of Vichy State University.
The next day I visited the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, where I ate a large grilled shrimp salad made by members of an inmate organization. There is a new waterfowl preserve. I see that I should send shirts and socks to the inmate in question. Very few visitors seem middle class. Everyone I saw on Death Row was Black, including the guards and orderlies.
A cold front from Canada had taken the humidity out of the air, so we had what is known as “California” weather.
Axé.
