The reason people want you to do so much service is so they can hang out with you. At one job I made friends with another new hire and it was to go to libraries, having someone to drive with and then go explore cafés. That was fine but at other jobs I have been corralled by people who say, save us!
In one instance I decided they were right, the obstacles were so many that the only thing to do was remove them, otherwise one would be blocked from working and also not do anything to unblock. Or so I was convinced then.
Later, though, new hires would say this and it was precisely the wrong thing to say to engage me. Now I see what it all is — it is about socializing.
Axé.

– I know! I’m finally starting to realize this. And that’s scary. I have to wonder, what are people hiding from in all this socialization.
Well, from various things, or they are looking for various things, and I do not think it is all bad all the time. I do find the attempt to press one into service problematic and I am starting to realize it is an attempt to enmesh and that I have had various Spanish colleagues who expected it outright from women, hmm.
