As we know, I gave oral final examinations for Spanish 3 for five hours today. I learned that the students are obsessed with the 1950s.
– The economy was good in the 1950s and the bills were paid. There was more leisure time.
– Many white women would like to live in the 1950s. They would be able to wear all the 1950s clothes. Their husband would work and they would stay home, taking care of a large house in the country and cooking for their husband and children. In the middle of the day, they would shop with their friends.
– Many Black women, if they could live in another era, would live in the 1950s and be Rosa Parks. Could they really be that brave? They are not sure, but they would like to think so. The 1950s were not an era of greater ease than ours, but of greater heroism.
– Martin Luther King was an extremist.
Axé.
Not the down and dirty 50’s I grew up in!
They really need a history class. I also got this week, from a graduate student, “neocolonialism can be a great thing.”
