Brave new boots

stone creek

These are what I settled on for winter kayaking. Mine have an orange rim. Shoes I had to walk by and resist to get these included the Dansko Nadine and Rae, and the Frye Audra Button Heel. I have gotten over the Gabor Gabor and there will always be more Dansko and Frye shoes.

A man who looked Native American and spoke with a heavy French accent told me these boots were for working in the oilfield, but I will push my low boat off muddy banks. I have not been out on the bayous in winter in three or four years, but in May we planted seagrass on the coast, to hold off erosion.

On the water is where to be in Louisiana. Winter mornings the geese fly against little clouds, dense and hard like pebbles. The sun and cold and reeds come to inhabit you and your mind is an iris or a water lily. I am always radiant by the time we get to the oyster shack, coming in.

Axé.
