St. Joseph the Worker

March 19 is St. Joseph’s day, my favorite holiday after Hallowe’en. This is an esoteric taste but it is the spring equinox and here the Mardi Gras Indians have important parades on this day. There are extravagant altars all over New Orleans and you must visit them, and eat the food that is on them.

St. Joseph was a carpenter and he is good not just for famine, but for hurricanes. The nuns who live next door to me explained that when a hurricane tries to tear a board from your house, you say: “St. Joseph, put your foot on it!”

Axé.
