As a child, I knew I should go on stage; now, I know I could hold a courtroom.

I just gave a seminar for 200 people and I am a brilliant presenter. I should be one of those people who teach large lecture courses. I bring others in for spots con mucho swing. I have marvelous pictures behind me and can zoom in when required but mostly people are looking at me because I am like an Alvin Ailey dance star. I do not only take, but I also elicit comments and questions.

It is not only I who say this — these facts are so well known that when the university wants to show people what it is like to attend an event here, one of the things they do is show pictures of me lecturing.

It is not something I do often, as I do not teach that kind of course, but I find it interesting that the press is against in-person lectures designed to engage a specific audience, but in favor of pre-recorded large lectures designed for a vague and remote audience, who cannot neither participate live in the creation of the lecture as audiences do.

But now that I have written that, I do understand. They are a certain kind of press, and they pontificate without content; of course the asynchronous reactions to them will be more interesting than anything they could say or that could be said in their presence. They imagine us to be like them; I think we should just call the Catalan Vengeance on them.

  1. Not to undercut what you are saying, but are there any videos available of your lectures?

    1. No, and I don’t think video would work. You have to be there. It is not something to watch but something to participate in. I could get videotaped giving a research presentation and have that work (and be dynamic) but this was a teaching presentation and would not really come across as a movie.
