Thain, thegn, thane

This evening my mother and I were looking at the book on her father’s family. She has the book, and I called it up from Hathitrust. On page 3 you can see a picture of their 1300-1659 seat, Holloway Court, in Kent. The family motto was spes alit agricolam.

Prior to 1225 there is no continuous record of them but it is theorized that they came from southern France through the Rhineland, entering England and Kent with the Jute invasion of 449. The Jutes spoke Kentish. By 690 they are on record as thains or thegnmen, and they are considered an ancient family of Snodland.

We can be traced back to Johannes Tillman, b. 1225. We would like to visit this past. I could meet a thane and he would be my ancestor. One Charles Henry Fielding describes the area, its history and its customs, in a charming book from 1893.

Axé.
