Reviewing, to see how much of this I should bring up in my departmental context now.

• There are lots of students in Spanish. Spanish doesn’t get enough resources and other languages feel crowded.
• There is lots of scholarship as well on Hispanism as a construct, by people including Gabilondo, Mariscal, Moreiras, and Resina.
• The situation is that Spanish is like English, a second national language and not a foreign one. That’s the reason for the enrollments, not that it has eclipsed other “foreign” ones.
• See comment by Reed Way Dasenbrook in the 2004 ADFL bulletin on how we may deplore what ICE does but then reenact it academically with the rigid borders set up between Spanish and English.
• North America is now part of Latin America and that is important.
• What this means for curriculum in Spanish is that it should be more like curriculum in English, and “Latino” studies/LAS should not be marginal.

This is a good text but I don’t know how key for the current chair. Still, it’s good as an conversation opener and reminder for this chair and dean, to whom I have already delivered more recent writings in this vein

For me, the bibliography is good and I should read it although it’s old, and put it in a bibliography for students although it is too much.
