Naomi Weisstein was more egregiously mistreated than many of us, but also had a clearer sense of what was happening … perhaps because things were so much less veiled in those days … or perhaps because times were better. Weisstein: Wellesley faculty were brilliant and had to work at Wellesley because as women they were … More Weisstein, Valian
I have heard this many times, but in fact I do believe I am unlike the others. Neither the management of time, nor of money, nor of “impulses” is difficult for me. Most advice on life does not apply to me because it is about these three topics. I am unlike some others, too, in … More “Do Not Think You Are Not Like the Others”
Do you think it is possible to save money and get in shape at the same time? I am going to try it and here is how. Off shopping list: beer, cheese, fowl, fruit juice, meat, most fruit, milk, spirits, wine. On shopping list: almonds, beans, brown rice, buttermilk, couscous, lettuce, limes, melons, miso, olives, … More Shopping List
The Spring, clad all in gladness Doth laugh at Winter’s sadness. UPDATE on seasons: I cannot remember a cooler month of May in Louisiana. Since it is cool and the semester is ending, I keep thinking it is Christmas. Yet last night I dreamed of sleeping in summer under the big trees. UPDATE on time: … More Valeria Mignaco
Or, Rematando al rechingado de Robert Boice. I see myself in some of Boice’s examples, as in being busy all the time but not making progress, and spending time contemplating the problem which could, at least in theory, be time spent tackling the job. Of course, when a colleague from another school visited and saw … More Rematando a Robert Boice
That is what I say. One of the most pernicious claims of Robert Boice is that cleaning is a form of “procrastination” and also that it is easy. You should sit down in dirt and disorder, and produce brilliant work. When I heard this and, it having been preached so fervently, tried it, I failed. … More “Clean the Office, Then Write”
So the reason I am obsessed with Robert Boice is, what he has to say applies to me in part and in part, not. I think he assumes one is either interested in one’s work, and so is at least not trying to force that, or is not interested, and so must force it. And … More Et encore…
I am moving this post up because it got no comments and I really want to know: what do you think goes into condescension? It is a power move, but (a) do you think it is undertaken to cover insecurity or (b) just for the fun of putting someone down? Mostimportantly, do you think condescenders … More On Condescension
I enjoyed Anne Lamott‘s Bird by Bird, wherein one is allowed to have an otherwise lackluster day if one is writing and still call it good. In this book writing can be messy and it has to do with life. In that way I find Lamott more interesting than Robert Boice who wants one to … More Working It Out
This repost is dedicated, variously, to Clarissa, Feminéma, Jonathan Mayhew, Historiann, New Kid on the Hallway, Tenured Radical, and Undine, to a few others I have forgotten, to some interesting assistant professor blogs like Paper Chase and Uentdenckt that have disappeared. Remember, I am for the rights of adjuncts and I believe they should have … More On Being New Faculty
