On Hats

Having been informed that Barack Obama seems too northern and urban to play well in rural areas, and that his having donned this hat in Austin – the hat that I said made him look like a Louisiana man – helped a great deal, I hasten to reproduce the image.

western obama

The photograph is by Matthew Wright, and here it is in its original context. For your general cultural information, this is the hat you must wear in winter in lands west of the Mississippi, or you will just not look like a person who might be able to comprehend local reality. In summer, one wears a fine straw hat.

  1. What I find odd is that someone smart actually told me that his wearing the hat actually made the difference … made this voter think he might be an interesting candidate after all. WTF? A hat? WOW people are irrational … I remember being a child, and hearing people say they were voting for Nixon because he was good looking, I thought that was a bad reason then, and I think it is really strange to base one’s consideration on whether someone looks like folks or not … but then a lot of people do things by their guts and I am often told I am all too reasonable and rational, and that it is a fault.

Well you know Jackie O planned the whole Camelot theme. I saw a biography special where she said she taught John Jr. to salute at her father’s funeral. They practiced it together beforehand. I loathe nothing in politics as I loathe the “let’s pretend I’m one of you even though you know that I’m not.” wink wink. Or “let’s pretend you are a good ol’ boy or what have you. I HATE CHARADES in politics. Show us what you got, what you will do, and be done with it. I can play act with third graders.

  3. “to salute at her father’s funeral. ”

to salute at his father’s funeral. Even knowing it was staged how many people just loved it and gave John Jr. more credit than he deserved. As if he was an astute little boy. It just looked like he was an astute little boy.
