I suppose the reason people find research so stressful is that that is what they will be evaluated on. I understand completely.
I do not mean to suggest teaching is not valuable. Remember, I even think administration is valuable and in thinking that I truly transgress.
I do mean that I am tired of the transformation of intellectual and creative work into a painful burden and I do not think that is a luxury most of us can afford.
I am reacting to that and also to the idea that there is only one possible research trajectory, and that if one does not follow the one sacred path, one is doomed.
When I say I think people who truly don’t like research should quit, what I mean is, I am tired of dealing with people trying to bring others down into gloom.
The reason I have always wanted to go back to school and get a different research career is so that I could have one in which people would not say every day that research was onerous or should be for people like me.
This entire blog is about reclaiming pleasure and resisting obstruction and gloom; I shall not be moved today and I shall never be moved.
