Some light reading on gender

Here. My feminist education is lacking. I am very often called unnaturally or unfairly rational, and also bossy. In fact I am neither, only competent. If my feminist education were better I would have realized before now that these were discriminatory terms based on gender stereotypes.

  1. Am I reading the wrong article? This seems to be about rejecting women and claiming it’s because they are crazy. Ask any divorced man about his ex wife and he will tell you she was crazy.

    1. I refer to this section:

We insist that someone can’t be emotional and rational at the same time, so she has to prove that she’s not being irrational. Anything she says to the contrary can just be used as evidence against her.

More often than not, I suspect, most men don’t realize what we’re saying when we call a woman crazy. Not only does it stigmatize people who have legitimate mental health issues, but it tells women that they don’t understand their own emotions, that their very real concerns and issues are secondary to men’s comfort. And it absolves men from having to take responsibility for how we make others feel.

In the professional world, we’ve had debates over labels like “bossy” and “brusque,” so often used to describe women, not men. In our interpersonal relationships and conversations, “crazy” is the adjective that needs to go.

  2. It’s worse than that. It’s an attack on a woman’s very existence. It’s also used to push women out of their own lives.

Well, I think we may be talking past each other here, but that’s how this all strikes me.

    1. No, I just think you see some of these things more clearly than I. Things used to push women out of their own lives, that is what has been done to me — my mother/my parents (Dad deferred to her) and then Reeducation (the part of it that was psychotherapy) were both designed to convince me I was “crazy” and should abandon my life. Abandon myself, I mean.
